“No Accident”—Contemporary Photographers Explore 19th Century Processes September 3 – October 2 Garden City, NY – The Nassau Community College Firehouse Art Gallery is proud to host “No Accident,” an exhibition of projects by six photographers who have chosen to experiment with various nineteenth century photographic processes. The exhibit runs from September 3 through October 2, with an artists’ reception on Wednesday, September 18, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. One might say that the choice of using outdated techniques has become a major movement in contemporary photography, perhaps one that is motivated largely by the desire to go against the grain of the technological frenzy of the past ten years. The inception of photography has been discussed as a history of international invention, widespread experimentation and attention to accident. The artists whose works are on display here have embraced that spirit of accident and experimentation and employ their process as a self-conscious way of exploring the contemporary relation to history, beauty, truth, race and the age-old debate about art vs. science. Techniques employed include pinhole photography, bromoil, tintype and albumen prints. The “No Accident” exhibit and reception are free and open to the public. For gallery hours, or more information, please call Lisa Young or Lynn Casey at 516-572-7165.
